Olde English Babydoll Southdown Sheep are a heritage breed originating from the South Down Hills of Sussex County England. Baby doll sheep , known as the smiling sheep, have teddy bear faces . They are hardy with a docile nature and are easy keepers. They are small in stature (24" or less at the shoulder). The ewes are good mothers. They are ideal for sheep for smaller acreages, homesteads, and hobby farms and as weeders in mature orchards and vineyards.
Often called the smiling sheep with their teddy bear faces they are incredibly cute. Referenced by some as miniature sheep, this heritage breed was brought to America around 1803. They are diminutive in size 18" to 24" at the shoulder. I purchased them because I have a smaller acreage, wanted sheep without horns (so I didn't have to worry about the grandkids being aroung them), and wanted a fiber that could be used to make a variety of items. These smaller sheep with their docile nature and fine fiber fit the bill perfectly.
The Olde English Babydoll Southdown fine wool fleece is of cashmere quality wool with a fiber diameter of 19 - 25 microns. Fleece weights range from 4 to 8 pounds. Their wool has a blocky, rectangular staple with a length from 1.5 to 4 inches. The durability and softness of the wool makes it best suited for sweaters, mittens, hats, or socks. The wool is not easily felted. A sample swatch can be made to determine if a product made from a fleece will be machine washable. When fiber with a shorter staple length is spun a rustic fiber is created. The fiber is very springy and adds memory when blended with alpaca or llama fiber.
